Clean Up

Burning the dead branches from the storm

We had 7 piles of branches to burn!

Thursday dawned bright and early. It was projected to be the hottest day of the summer. Sounded like the perfect day for me to finally clean up all of those branches!

Mosquitoes be damned…. I had a job to do! After putting almost an entire bottle of OFF or Cutter or some other spray on me, my face, my ears, neck, clothes and anything else that might need covering I was off to clean up the yard.

When we moved into the house 1.8 acres sounded so awesome my head was swooning. Coming from 1000 sq. feet of apartment bliss in the city I couldn’t wait to have all that wonderful space. I was even looking forward to cutting the grass (once I learned how to ride a lawnmower). Hell, I was hoping they would measure grass cutting in beers. You know… ‘Oh that lawn is a beauty. It’s a three beer lawn. You just have to cut the slopes first.’

This is about 1/2 of the backyard - Yikes!

Surprise! No one told me about the actual WORK involved! What the….

So at 9 am out into the yard this newbie went. Picking up branches and roof tiles and sticks. Wayyyyy to paranoid to leave anything on the lawn for fear that our lawnmower couldn’t take it.

1.8 acres is A LOT of land. More importantly, I think it translates into 1.8 million mosquitoes per square yard. After a while I was beginning to wonder if Cutter made a spray that was 100% DEET (you know… that really healthy chemical) for those that were truly desperate.

After about 3 hours Melissa and I had managed to get all of the piles of branches down to the fire pit and I started our first BONFIRE. It was a doozy. We had 7 piles of branches.

WooHoo! Right? No. Not really. Remember I told you that it was supposed to be the hottest day of the year so far? Well it was. If our neighbors had been there I’m sure they would have been saying…. “What’s with the crazy people that just moved in?”

Nonetheless I managed to burn all of the dead branches and some construction wood that was lying around. All in all a good 4 or 5 hours of honest work.

And that was the crux of the week. At least the most interesting parts of it. On Friday I woke up to another storm. It was very pretty and the smells were unbelievable. And after getting all packed up for my final commute to Chicago I began to pull out.

And as I pulled out of the driveway – Goddamn! If there weren’t a thousand broken branches on the lawn again!

Ok, I laughed for a good 5 minutes after reading this one….you are describing every weekend of my summer sweetheart! It never ends!!!! Oh, and just so you’re clear – that thing’s called a burn pile, and you can put EVERYTHING in it, not just branches! (No rubber/plastic tho – besides being really bad for the environment, it stinks to high heaven.) :):) And this’ll sound crazy, but try putting Listerine in a spray bottle & using that for the mosquitos – don’t know why, but it seems to work! Luv ya!
